Safety techniques when working with disinfectants
In modern conditions, a wide range of disinfectants is used for disinfection. Some of them have an irritating effect upon contact with the skin, mucous membranes of the eyes and respiratory organs, can be absorbed through the skin and mucous membranes, and also have an allergic effect. Medical personnel performing disinfection work may also be exposed to adverse physical factors (high temperature, high humidity, radiant energy, etc.). In order to protect the health of medical workers and to avoid accidental poisoning when working with disinfectants, it is necessary to follow certain occupational health and safety measures.
That everyone who comes to work in disinfection facilities undergoes a preliminary medical examination. Repeated medical examinations are carried out at least once a year. Persons younger than 18, pregnant women and women are not allowed to work with disinfectants.
All work related to disinfectants (packing, preparation of solutions, treatment of objects, etc.) is carried out in overalls (gown, boots, handkerchief) with mandatory use of personal protective equipment (respirator, gloves, airtight glasses). To protect the skin of the hands from dust-like preparations, cotton gloves are recommended, and when working with solutions of disinfectants, rubber technical gloves or gloves with a film coating are recommended. It is not recommended to use medical gloves due to the fact that the flow of disinfectants into them creates conditions for skin irritation and better absorption. It is not possible to work with disinfectants in the presence of maceration, scratches, wounds on the parts of the body exposed to the effects of the agents, since damaged skin facilitates the penetration of the drug into the body.
When carrying out all work with disinfectants, it is necessary to observe the rules of personal hygiene. It is forbidden to smoke and take food and drinks in the treated room.
In order to avoid accidents, disinfectants must not be left unattended, food products must not be stored in production facilities, and food products must not be transported together with disinfectants.
It is necessary to strictly follow the rules for storing disinfectants. They are stored in undamaged containers in warehouses equipped with supply and exhaust ventilation. The warehouse space should be dry, have smooth plastered walls and a cement floor. The warehouse should have several rooms: for storing disinfectants, for dispensing them, and for the storekeeper's room. There should be a first aid kit in the room.
Disinfectants (container, packaging) must have clear passports indicating the name, date of manufacture, expiration date.
